How to build a ground mount with top caps
-
1
Lay out your poles
Mark a straight line of ground pipe positions, spaced to fit your panels.
-
2
Set the ground pipes
Set 2" or 2.5" pipe in concrete at the same height. Follow local codes for depth.
-
3
Cap each pole
Drop a top cap on each pipe and tighten the set bolts.
-
4
Run cross pipe & mount panels
U-bolt the 2" cross pipe across the caps, add rails and bolt on your panels.

What buyers say on Amazon
This is a solid piece of hardware! … This bracket is heavy duty. It's just what we needed for our project. We were so impressed that we ordered a second one and will likely order more as we expand the project.
I used these for a ground-mount solar panel array. It slid over the post, which was cemented into the ground. The U-bolts work well and are grade 8. The notches for the bolts to go through are conveniently cut out so that it doesn't need to be exact in order for it to attach.
This thing is solid!! I have it connected to a 410 watt solar panel and it allows me to tilt and turn the panel based on the time of year… It's heavy and solid.
The plan is to mount 4 300 watt solar panels to it. This mount will easily handle that.
FAQ
Array top cap questions
How does shipping work?
Shipping is free. Amazon packs and ships every order from its fulfillment centers and emails you tracking. Prime members can check out with Buy with Prime for Prime delivery.
How many top caps do I need?
One per ground pipe. A small array might use 2, a large one up to 20.
Which size fits my pipe?
Measure the outside diameter (OD). 2 3/8" OD is 2" pipe; 2 7/8" OD is 2.5" pipe.
Can I use oilfield pipe?
Yes, as long as the outside diameter matches. Schedule 40/80 galvanized pipe also works.
What else do I need to buy?
The cap comes with U-bolts and set bolts for the pipes only. You also need ground pipe, 2" cross pipe, concrete, panel rails and hardware to attach your panels. All are available at hardware or big box stores. Our build guide has a full parts list.
